NEWSLETTER June’11

GENERAL NEWS

Well at last we have some sunshine back into our days, and long may it last. As you may have noticed there has been a slight shortage of Newsletters as late of which we send our apologies. We are currently undergoing some internal training of our Webpage, and updating our e-mail information bank, in order that we can upload information manually from Jennyswell. Due to this we have been unable to make any changes to the webpage and also have been unable to upload any information i.e Newsletters, and this process took considerably longer than anticipated. However, we are well on our way so here we are back on track.

As you can imagine Jennyswell remains as busy as ever with lots going on. Thankfully the warm weather is returning to Scotland so ensure your child/ren have a sunhat and sun cream within the nursery at all times ~ let them get the best from the lovely sunshine, plenty of outdoor experiences.

Summer is a busy time at Jennyswell with our :-

UNDER 3 BEACH PARTY ;- FRIDAY 1st JULY 2.30 – 4.30p.m

STAFF NEWS

Firstly Jennyswell would like to say a fond farewell to Joanne Adam who is off to an even warmer climate in Tenerife to become a Children’s Holiday rep. Joanne has been with Jennyswell for over 5 years and will be missed by all, we’ve made her promise to send us lots of postcards telling us of her new life and exciting adventures. Joannes replacement will be Jennifer Mahon (SVQ3 qualified), Jennifer will be joining our staff team shortly with 2 years nursery experience.

We have also said goodbye to Stacey Farren and Rachael Bannaghan who have now completed their SVQ 3 and finished their training with us, Jennyswell would like to wish them well with their future.

A warm welcome to some new faces over the past few months ~ Valerie Whyte joins us in our baby building, Val (SVQ3 qualified) comes with a wealth of baby room experience and is keen to progress with new programmes within the playrooms for the children to explore and enjoy. Kimberly Bennie also joins our Baby room team, again Kim (SVQ3 qualified) has 3 years experience within all age ranges of the nursery.

Finally a Hello again ~ Clare Keegan who left in September to progress her career in Primary teaching has returned to Jennyswell ! Clare will be working supply with us (covering annual leave etc) so a welcomed return, watch out for her popping up from time to time.

BABY ROOM

Well as per usual the baby room has been busy busy busy!!! Both playrooms are opened every day with Emma & Duncan in our ground floor room and Val and Kim working in the top floor room. Both rooms have been working on their creative skills, exploring paint, glue, crayons and lots and lots of messy play!

The babies will be making the most of the nice summer weather, with walks to the park and the nature reserve and plenty of outdoor. Curricular activities will see the babies focusing on their fine and large motor skills, developing control of their movements through various physical activities.

TODDLER ROOM

The toddlers again have been working hard and learning lots of new things. They have been focusing on learning their colours and shapes, working on their fine finger control with threading and cutting and developing their problem solving skills through design and creation. Yvonne has been spending time with the children discussing through the aspect of planning and creation ~ allowing the children to choose what they would like to make, drawing out their plans, then using junk to build their creation. This is something the older children within the playroom have been exploring, which when they move up to the 3-5 room these skills will be well developed and embedded in their daily routine.

The month of June will see the toddlers focusing on the theme of growing, learning what things we need to help our bodies grow. They are also growing sunflowers which can be found within the playroom, we have some strong starters and  these have been re-planted within our garden area, hopefully we will see them grow throughout the summer.

3-5 ROOM

Well what can we say about the 3-5 room, they remain as productive as ever with plenty of fun packed activities, experiences and adventures on the go every day. Recently they have been learning about health and nutrition, focusing on good foods for your body and bad foods. Learning about exercise and how it helps your body, and the many different things you can do to keep fit and healthy. The children have taken part in some discussions with staff and mind mapping to help us develop our new summer menu’s which you can see their suggestions and the new menus shortly through displays. They have also taken part in some smoothie making ~ very messy times but incredibly yummy!!!!

At present the 3-5 room are working hard practicing for their Summer Concert and Graduation, a very eventful time, so watch out for lots of dancing, singing, stories and rhymes. All parents and family will be invited to attend as usual ~ tickets can be purchased from staff within the 3-5 room. Please be reminded if you have not purchased a ticket prior to the event tickets can be purchased at the door.

The staff are also working on transitions with the pre-school children, getting them ready for their new adventures as the head off to Primary school. Kelly will be holding a transfer of information evening with pre-school parents within the next few weeks ~ please speak to Kelly for further details.

JENNYSWELL OUT OF SCHOOL CARE @ LOCHFIELD AND TODHOLM

GENERAL NEWS

Now that we are back from the Easter break, we hope to look forward to the continued good weather which I am sure you all enjoyed over the last month, especially with all the school holidays that have taken place !! The children in both After School Clubs have also been taking advantage of the good weather, spending most of their time outdoors engaged in various activities, as you may have seen when collecting your child(ren).  We hope to continue this outdoor play and would like to advise parents that as the weather is getting hotter could you please provide suncream and a hat in your child’s bag to accommodate the change in weather.  On the subject of outdoor play, the children at Todholm A.S.C  use the school football pitches and as you can imagine the red ash from the pitch can be quite messy therefore we would also advise parents if they wish to provide a change of casual clothes or footwear for their child they may do so also.

UPDATES FROM LAST MONTH

Equipment

During April the children of both A.S.C, took part in a survey about physical resources where they were asked to comment on existing equipment and provide ideas of their own as to new equipment they would like to see within their A.S.C. The children were then involved in checking current resources, and given a budget to spend on outdoor / physical equipment based on the information collected from their surveys. This resulted in the children ordering their own new equipment and we have now purchased scooters, assorted balls, hoola hoops, tennis rackets and skipping ropes, at the children’s request.

Parents Committee

Progress from the parents committee has slowed down a little due to the number of school holidays, however, we hope to get back on track during the course of this month and are currently awaiting responses from our interested parents as they decide which roles of the committee they wish to fulfil.

Policy Review

We have now completed the final draft of our Absence Policy and this will be available as of next week within both A.S.C facilities for parents to read. We would like to thank all parents who took part in this review, as the comments provided were taken on board and included in the updated policy.

WHATS HAPPENING THIS MONTH

New term / playscheme

Staff within the A.S.C are now handing out application forms for both the new term (2011-2012) school enrolment and the summer playscheme. We would advise parents to complete these forms A.S.A.P in order for them to be processed quickly and efficiently, therefore providing you with as much notice as possible for your childcare arrangements.  The summer playscheme was a huge success last year with the children going on lots of various outings, taking part in art projects and enjoying both indoor and outdoor activities.  Again, as with previous years, the response we get from parents will determine how long the playscheme will run for and the earlier you return your application forms the better to enable staff to prepare in advance for outings etc .

News from Lochfield

This month the children will be taking part in an underwater/sea theme which will involve the children putting their artistic talents to good use in making weird and wonderful sea creatures from paper mache. Other activities that the children will be taking part in are fact finding activities and physical/outdoor play.

News from Todholm

This month the children will be taking part in themes of planting and fashion, and we are looking for parents to donate any unwanted items of clothing they may have, which the children could use. We currently have a large selection of dressing up outfits which are themed and the children’s ideas were to use real clothes to make their fashion show more realistic. The staff at Todholm A.S.C would welcome any contributions from parents. A trip to Dobbies garden centre has also been arranged in connection with the children’s theme of planting. Staff will be informing parents of the arrangements for this, next week.

AND LASTLY.....

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself ( Angela Bradley ) as the manager of both A.S.C facilities. I have worked within Jennyswell in both the nursery and the after school care setting over the last 12 years and have recently been promoted to A.S.C Manager. I look forward to your support and I am available at both afterschool clubs at least one day a week or can be contacted at Jennyswell – 0141 842 1188 or via e-mail at- elainejennyswell@aol.co.uk.
